Students demand punishment of alleged teacher

Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) demanded the exemplary punishment of the teacher who allegedly sexually harassed a female student of his department.

Over 50 students under the banner ‘Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad (BSCASP)’ formed a human chain at the central shahed minar premises around at 2.00 pm.

Speakers at the programme urged the university authority to immediate suspension of the alleged teacher who sexually harassed a female student of his department.

Addressing the rally, Environmental Sciences professor Jamal Uddin said, “Jahangirnagar University (JU) has a rich history of anti-sexual harassment movement. As a teacher I am ashamed that our student is sexually abused by one of our colleagues.”

Co-convener of BSCASP Joynal Abedin Shishir said, “When victim went to file complaint against Sanwar Siraj, several teachers of her department tortured mentally. Instead of doing the duty they were assigned to do, they developed a syndicate of sexual harassment.  They all also should be punished.”

Bangladesh Students Union, Socialist Students Front, Socialist Student Front (Marxist), Jahangirnagr Cultural Alliance expressed solidarity with them.

They also demanded the exemplary punishment of the teacher immediately.

Later a protest rally was brought out from the shahid minar premises that paraded different streets on the campus.

Earlier, a female student brought allegation against Dr Sanwar Siraj, Assistant Professor of Government and Politics department and submitted a complaint letter to the Chairman of the department.

In a written complaint, she alleged that, Sanwar Siraj frequently offered her for making a physical relationship though she claimed that she always refused it.

Now, the complaint has sent to Anti-Sexual Harassment Cell of the university and a 7-member probe body has formed in this connection.
